About the Research
The scholarship is part of a cutting-edge project aimed at understanding how mantle convection impacts Earth’s magnetic field as the inner core grows, and its potential links to the development of complex life. The PhD candidate will explore:
- Mantle and Core Interactions: Quantifying the effects of sinking oceanic lithosphere on the core-mantle boundary heat flow.
- Magnetic Field Reversals: Investigating how core-mantle boundary heat flux affects the Earth’s magnetic field reversal rate.
- Geodynamo Simulations: Developing models to simulate core dynamics and compare results with paleomagnetic observations.
The project builds on state-of-the-art mantle flow reconstructions and explores key geological periods such as the Ediacaran-Cambrian era, providing insights into Earth’s past and the stability of its magnetic field.
Eligibility Criteria

- Outstanding academic record in a related field.
- Experience in research with a thesis of high quality (Honours, Masters, or MSci).
- Knowledge of solid Earth processes, fluid dynamics, quantitative analysis, and programming (e.g., Python).
- Duration: 3.5 years of full-time study.
- Student Type: Open to domestic and international students, including future students and first-year candidate.
