Ireland Kader Asmal Fellowships 2027 With Tuition, Flights and Living Support
The Irish Government has opened applications for the Kader Asmal Fellowship 2027/2028, giving qualified South African professionals a chance to complete a funded master’s degree in Ireland.
This is not a small university discount or a partial tuition award. Selected fellows receive support for tuition, travel, accommodation, insurance, visa-related costs and day-to-day living expenses while studying at an eligible Irish higher education institution.
For applicants who already have professional experience and want to move into leadership, policy, research or specialist roles, this is one of the most substantial postgraduate funding routes currently available from South Africa to Ireland.
A Funded Master’s Route for South African Professionals
The Kader Asmal Fellowship is part of the Ireland Fellows Programme, an initiative supported by the Irish Government to educate professionals who can contribute to development, public services and institutional progress in their home countries.
The programme is aimed at applicants who are not simply looking for another academic credential. It is designed for people who already understand the problems facing their sector and now need advanced postgraduate training to address them.
Successful candidates will begin an eligible one-year master’s programme in Ireland during the 2027/2028 academic year.
The fellowship is particularly relevant for professionals working in government, universities, NGOs, education, public health, technology, agriculture, engineering, business, law, development and other fields connected to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Subjects Available Under the Kader Asmal Fellowship
The fellowship supports master’s-level study only. Applicants must choose three suitable postgraduate programmes from the official Ireland Fellows Programme Directory of Eligible Programmes. Available fields include:
- Agriculture and food-related studies
- Health and public health
- Education and educational leadership
- Human rights and law
- Computer science and information technology
- Engineering and technical disciplines
- Business, management and finance
- Environmental and development-related studies
- Public policy and governance
- Social sciences and related professional fields
The exact list of courses depends on the official programme directory, so applicants should not choose a degree first and check its eligibility later. The safer strategy is to work directly from the approved directory and select three programmes that clearly match both academic history and professional experience.
A candidate working in public health, for example, should not suddenly apply for an unrelated business degree simply because it appears attractive. Selection panels will expect a logical connection between past work, proposed study and future plans.
What the Fellowship Pays For?
The financial package is one of the strongest features of the Kader Asmal Fellowship and the award generally covers:
- Full academic tuition fees
- Economy airfare to and from Ireland
- Visa application expenses
- Medical and travel insurance
- Irish residence permit costs
- A settling-in allowance after arrival
- A completion and departure allowance
- Student accommodation during the main academic period
- A monthly living stipend of approximately €700
- Additional accommodation support during the final study period, depending on location
Housing support is especially important because accommodation costs in Ireland, particularly in Dublin, can be difficult for international students to manage independently.
The fellowship does not, however, cover spouses, children or other dependents. It is intended for the selected fellow only. Applicants planning to travel with family members must be prepared to arrange and finance their visas, accommodation and living expenses separately.
Who Can Apply for the 2027 Intake?
This fellowship is open only to resident nationals of South Africa. Applicants from other countries are not eligible under the Kader Asmal stream. Candidates must generally meet the following conditions:
- Be a South African resident national
- Hold a recognized bachelor’s degree
- Have a minimum GPA of around 3.0 on a 4.0 scale or an equivalent strong academic result
- Have completed the bachelor’s degree in 2015 or later
- Possess at least two years of substantial and directly relevant work experience
- Not already hold a master’s degree or higher qualification
- Not currently be studying for a master’s degree or higher qualification
- Be available to begin a new master’s programme in Ireland from August 2027 or later
- Select three eligible programmes connected to their academic and professional background
- Demonstrate leadership ability and a commitment to South Africa’s development
- Be prepared to take up the fellowship during the 2027/2028 academic year
Applicants with a lower second-class bachelor’s result may still be considered if they have strong and directly relevant professional experience, but this should not be treated as an easy exception. They will need a persuasive record of responsibility, achievement and sector impact.
What Makes an Applicant Competitive?
The selection committee is unlikely to be impressed by generic statements about wanting international exposure or studying at a good university.
- A competitive applicant should be able to explain three things clearly.
- First, what professional or development problem have they encountered in South Africa?
- Second, why is the selected master’s programme in Ireland the right academic response to that problem?
- Third, how will they use the degree after returning to their professional field?
Applicants should support leadership claims with evidence. Managing a project, improving a process, leading a team, designing a programme, influencing policy or solving a community problem will carry more weight than simply describing themselves as motivated.
The fellowship also expects applicants to write in an authentic personal voice. Overly generic, copied or artificially polished responses may weaken credibility.
English Language Requirements
Irish universities require proof of English-language proficiency, and there are no general exemptions from the admission standards of the selected institution.
Applicants who pass the first application stage but do not yet hold the required English test may be asked to take the Duolingo English Test. Where a chosen university or programme does not accept Duolingo, shortlisted candidates may need to sit an IELTS examination in January 2027.
Applicants should therefore check the English requirements of all three chosen programmes before submitting their course preferences.
Kader Asmal Fellowship Application Timeline
Stage 1 applications for the Kader Asmal Fellowship 2027/2028 opened on 29 June 2026 and will close on 26 July 2026. Applicants shortlisted through the preliminary round are expected to complete the detailed Stage 2 application between 21 September and 18 October 2026.
English-language testing and interviews will take place during the later stage of the selection process, with successful fellows preparing to begin their studies in Ireland during the 2027/2028 academic year.
Should You Apply?
This fellowship is worth serious attention if you are a South African professional with a strong bachelor’s degree, relevant work experience and a clear reason for studying in Ireland.
It is especially suitable for applicants planning careers in public policy, development, institutional leadership, specialist technical work, research, education, health, engineering or public service.
It is less suitable for recent graduates with limited professional experience, applicants seeking funding for a bachelor’s or PhD degree, or candidates whose main objective is long-term migration rather than returning with skills that can be applied in South Africa.
The strongest applications will come from people who can show that the Irish master’s degree is not an escape route from their career, but the next deliberate step within it.
