  • Open to scholars and advanced graduate students in the humanities or social sciences focusing on Turkey.
  • Graduate student applicants must have completed all requirements for their doctorate except the dissertation by June 2026.
  • Non-U.S. applicants can also apply if they reside in the U.S. or Canada and maintain an academic affiliation there.
  • ARIT encourages applicants across fields – history, anthropology, archaeology, literature, philosophy, political science, art history, and more.

Research Permissions & Visas

  • Applicants are responsible for securing the appropriate research permits and visas.
  • For short stays under three months, researchers may use a tourist visa and apply for permits inside Turkey.
  • For longer stays, a research visa must be obtained before entry.
  • If you plan to work with museum collections or libraries, you’ll need approval from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
  • ARIT may withhold stipend payments if research permissions are not secured.

Timeline – Mark Your Calendar!

The deadline to apply for the ARIT Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences in Turkey is November 1, 2025. Applicants will be notified of the results by late January 2026, giving scholars ample time to prepare for their research stay.
