Malaysia International Scholarships (MIS) 2026: Eligibility, Process, Deadline Info
Malaysia Has Opened a Serious Postgraduate Funding Door — and This One Is Worth Checking Fast
Malaysia has opened the Malaysia International Scholarship 2026, better known as MIS 2026, for talented international graduates who want to pursue full-time Master’s or PhD studies in Malaysia.
This is not one of those vague “study abroad opportunities” where the benefit is a tiny fee discount and a motivational brochure. MIS 2026 is a government-backed postgraduate scholarship that offers tuition fee coverage and a monthly living allowance of RM1,500 to selected scholars.
For applicants from eligible countries who are planning serious postgraduate study, Malaysia is quietly offering a practical route into Asian higher education — with funding, recognized universities, and research-focused opportunities. In other words, this is the kind of scholarship that deserves a proper look before the deadline starts chasing applicants like a final exam they forgot about.
The Big Funding Reveal: What MIS 2026 Actually Covers?
The strongest reason to pay attention to MIS 2026 is simple: it covers the two expenses students worry about most.
Selected scholars will receive tuition fee coverage for the entire sponsorship period. The tuition fees will be paid directly to the Malaysian university after the Ministry of Higher Education receives the university invoice.
Scholars will also receive a monthly living allowance of RM1,500, paid every four months after submission of progress reports.
So, while MIS 2026 may not turn student life into five-star luxury, it does remove a major financial burden. Tuition is handled, and scholars receive regular support to manage living costs while studying in Malaysia.
Degree Levels Available Under MIS 2026
The Malaysia International Scholarship 2026 is available for full-time postgraduate programs only.
Applicants may apply for:
- Master’s degree programs
- Doctor of Philosophy — PhD programs
Current postgraduate students already studying in Malaysian public universities or selected private higher education institutions may also apply, but there is one key condition: they must have at least two semesters remaining before the end of their study period.
This makes MIS 2026 useful not only for new applicants planning to enter Malaysia, but also for eligible international students already enrolled in Malaysian postgraduate programs.
Eligible Fields of Study Under MIS 2026
MIS 2026 is open to accredited courses, but priority will be given to applicants in selected academic areas.
The priority fields include Education; Arts and Humanities; Social Sciences, Journalism and Information; Business, Administration and Law; Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics; Information and Communication Technologies; Engineering, Manufacturing and Construction; Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Veterinary; and Health and Welfare.
However, applicants in health-related fields should note an important limitation: medicine, nursing, and pharmacy are not included under the Health and Welfare priority area.
This means MIS 2026 is especially relevant for students and researchers in education, ICT, engineering, social sciences, journalism, business, law, agriculture, natural sciences, humanities, and development-focused disciplines.
Who Can Apply for Malaysia Government Scholarship?
MIS 2026 is open to high-potential graduates from eligible recipient countries. Eligible applicants include citizens from ASEAN countries, including Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Applicants from Commonwealth countries are also included, along with graduates from several other listed countries such as Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, Georgia, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, South Korea, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Timor-Leste, Tunisia, Turkiye, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, and Yemen.
Applicants must either plan to pursue full-time postgraduate study in Malaysia or already be enrolled in an eligible Malaysian postgraduate program with at least two semesters remaining.
Eligibility Check: Are You a Strong Fit for MIS 2026?
MIS 2026 is not designed for applicants sending random applications just to “try their luck.” Malaysia is looking for academically strong postgraduate candidates who can handle serious study and research.
- For Master’s applicants, the applicant must be not more than 40 years old at the time of application.
- For PhD applicants, the applicant must be not more than 45 years old at the time of application.
Master’s applicants must have obtained at least a CGPA of 3.00 or Second Class Upper Honours at bachelor’s degree level.
PhD applicants must have obtained at least a CGPA of 3.00 or excellent results at Master’s level in courses related to the intended PhD study program.
Applicants must also show good English proficiency through one of the following: IELTS Band 6.0 or higher, TOEFL paper-based test score of 550 or higher, an equivalent TOEFL score, or an official letter from the previous university confirming that the earlier degree was taught in English.
For Master’s by Research and PhD applicants, a written research proposal of at least 1,000 words is required. This is not the place for sleepy, generic lines like “I want to help society.” The proposal should be clear, focused, relevant to the intended field, and strong enough to show that the applicant knows what they want to research.
Documents Required for MIS 2026 Application
Applicants must complete the online application form and upload the required documents in PDF format.
The required documents include a certified copy of passport with at least six months’ validity, certified academic transcripts, English proficiency test result or official medium-of-instruction letter, recommendation letters from two referees, admission letter to a Malaysian university if already admitted or currently studying, curriculum vitae, and research proposal for Master’s by Research and PhD applicants.
Academic transcripts should reflect all courses taken during previous study programs. If the transcript does not clearly show CGPA, marks, or score percentile, applicants must also submit a certified official document from the previous university explaining the grading system.
All documents must be in English. If any document is in another language, certified English translations must be provided. Applicants should not wait until the final night to arrange certified copies, translations, recommendation letters, and a research proposal. Scholarship deadlines have a special talent for arriving exactly when your documents are still “almost ready.”
How MIS 2026 Applications Will Be Selected?
MIS 2026 selection is based on more than academic scores. Strong grades matter, but they are not the whole story.
Applications will be reviewed based on outstanding academic and co-curricular achievement, quality of the research proposal, potential contribution toward advancement of technology and human well-being, and excellent English communication, writing, and reading skills.
For research applicants, topics connected to Malaysia may receive preference. That does not mean applicants must force Malaysia into every sentence, but if their research naturally connects with Malaysia’s development, technology, society, environment, education, or economy, they should make that relevance clear.
