The University of Basel, through the Ukrainian Research in Switzerland (URIS) initiative, is now accepting applications for the prestigious URIS Fellowships for 2026. This unique opportunity invites international scholars with a focus on Ukraine to apply for a fully funded six-month research and teaching stay in Switzerland.

What is the URIS Fellowship?

The URIS Fellowship aims to strengthen Ukrainian research and expertise within Swiss academia by hosting researchers who will actively contribute to Ukraine-related scholarship, teaching, and outreach. Fellows will engage in research and teach a semester-long course at the University of Basel, fostering the development of international academic exchange and collaboration.

Successful applicants can choose to begin their fellowship either in the Spring Semester (January–June 2026) or the Autumn Semester (July–December 2026).

Fellowship Benefits

Selected URIS Fellows will receive:

  • A monthly stipend of CHF 4,000.
  • Visa fee reimbursement, along with accident and health insurance coverage in Switzerland.
  • One round-trip travel from their home country to Basel.
  • A Swiss Federal Railways half-fare travel card and coverage of all work-related travel within Switzerland.
  • A shared office space at the University of Basel and access to the university’s full digital infrastructure.

Fellows must reside in Basel throughout the fellowship period and actively engage in academic events, lectures, and workshops coordinated by URIS.

Who Can Apply?

URIS is looking for internationally recognized scholars in the humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences, regardless of academic seniority. Applicants must demonstrate:

  • A university degree and completed PhD with excellence.
  • Experience in university-level teaching and the ability to conduct a Ukraine-related course (1.5 hours per week in English or German).
  • An ongoing research project focused on the history, politics, society, or culture of Ukraine.
  • A readiness to be actively involved in the URIS network and the Swiss research community on Ukraine.
