The Society for Italian Studies (SIS) has officially announced the launch of its inaugural SIS Postdoctoral Fellowship for the 2025–26 academic year — a prestigious and highly targeted opportunity for scholars looking to transform their PhD thesis in Italian Studies into a publishable book.

This fellowship is a landmark initiative for early-career researchers who have recently completed their doctorates at a UK or Irish university and wish to remain actively engaged in academic life while advancing their scholarly contribution to the field of Italian Studies.


About the Fellowship

The SIS Postdoctoral Fellowship is designed to support one exceptional candidate in 2025–26. The goal? To turn their recently completed PhD on an Italianist topic into a monograph while being hosted at a UK or Irish university with a dedicated Italian Department.

  • Duration: 12 months
  • Start Date: September or October 2025
  • Host Institution: Candidate’s choice (must be a UK or Irish Italian Department)

Fellowship Benefits

  • Stipend: Equivalent to the AHRC maintenance rate — currently £19,237, or £21,237 for those based in London.
  • Relocation Grant: A £500 contribution for those moving to a different UK/Ireland institution.
  • Payment: Directly to the candidate in two instalments. Candidates must manage tax obligations independently.

The Fellow will also gain non-stipendiary visiting status at their host department, with full access to university facilities such as email, IT systems, and libraries.


Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Have successfully completed their PhD viva (with all corrections signed off) at a UK or Irish university, no earlier than 9 May 2023.
  • Propose a project based on an Italianist topic and show a clear publication plan.
  • Be eligible to reside in the UK or Ireland, or be able to apply for a Graduate Visa.
  • Confirm departmental support from a UK or Irish university Italian Department (only one applicant per department will be supported).

Application Timeline

  • Application Deadline: The last date to apply for the SIS Postdoctoral Fellowship is Friday 9 May 2025 at 12 noon.
  • Result Announcement: The successful applicant will be notified by Friday 6 June 2025.
  • Fellowship Start: Expected to commence in September or October 2025 and run for 12 months.
